What is SEO?

The definition of SEO is the sum total of processes and methods to provoke search engines to give a website higher ranking positions inside their algorithm. And this is achieved through SEO best practices.

What are the SEO Best Practices?

There are many things that are involved in SEO, that got to be done the best way possible without breaking the guidelines provided by the main search engines. Google owning more than 80% of the search results is the one you should mind first when optimizing your website. Ten of these best practices are:

  1. Content Relevancy
  2. Loading Speed
  3. User experience
  4. External linking profile
  5. Internal linking
  6. Site authoritativeness
  7. Social signals
  8. Crawlability
  9. Internal duplication ratio
  10. Image optimization
  • Content Relevancy

This is the most important aspect of SEO, especially for your website presence. focus on creating content that is better than what is actually out there. Never copy other people’s content, but create your own original content.

  • Loading Speed

Google uses several factors to determine how fast your site loads. These factors include:

    • Number of server request
    • rendering blocking scripts
    • cache policy
    • Image size and formats
    • Cookies
    • DNS Look out
    • Among others
  • User experience

The best way to ensure your user’s experience is through usability testing. Map the behaviour you expect from your users, make a framework of the site and keep it simple. Don’t make it too hard for users to leave their data, or to make a payment. Try to keep the users doing what you want them to do, fast. The user interface is also very important, the users normally take around 3-5 seconds to complete an action, if they don’t, then they move to the next offer available. Don’t lose your sales!

  • Backlinking Profile

It is a prevalent practice that SEOs or those so-called experts, try to manipulate their backlinks acquisition. And indeed, their site will rank better, but for how long?

Google algorithms are smart enough to spot link manipulation. You cannot try to fool those algorithms because they are not one. However, other methods make your site’s visitors link to your site. That is the result of a good quality content profile on your website.

If you have content in your website for six months, and nobody backlinked to it, that is a clear sign that the content is not relevant enough to attract people to backlink to that content as reference.

  • Internal Linking

Internal linking is when you link to an existing page inside your website. This affects your site structure, and it should get considered as necessary as backlinking. The more you link internally to individual pages on your site, the better the site structure will be. It would be best if you kept in mind that the interlinked pages should be relevant to each other and part of your internal site strategy.

These three types of links you most care about:

    1. Internal linking: These URLs are the ones interlinked inside your website.
    2. External linking: These are the other websites you link to when they can support or help your content.
    3. Backlinks: These are third party websites pointing to your website.
  • Site Authoritativeness

Authoritativeness refers to the quality of the content your site contains about the facts that its covers. And how well your site is representing the subject in the scope of search engines. It takes time to build this kind of authority in your area, but once you gain the trust, not only of search engines but also of your audience, your site can become very valuable to its target audience.

  • Social Signals

Minimal website’s businesses use social signals to increase their website’s authority, and they should. Social media channels are growing fast, new networks are getting created, and latest marketing strategies are getting developed using social media channels. That is why your competition is ahead of you, if not ahead of you, close. It would help if you strategized your social signals as part of your marketing efforts. If you don’t, then your competitors will do it for you.

  • Crawlability

This term refers to the ability to be crawled by search engines, and the quality of that crawl to be high enough to be considered valuable information to get indexed by search engines.

It gets more important because a good crawl ability means more content gets indexed increasing the chances of your website to get ranked on better positions. You can also block bots from crawling your website because bots can also get used to harm your website or to spy on it.

  • Internal Duplication Ratio

The duplicate ratio is the percentage of the page content that gets repeated on other pages. Usually, less than 5% of the content on your site gets repeated. Having more than that represents a sign for optimization problems. So, having a high internal duplication ratio indicates that your site is under-optimized. There is no risk of penalty for having duplicate content, but it can hurt your rankings and site relevance.

  • Image Optimization

Image optimization refers to optimizing not only how big in terms of kilobytes the image is, but also the dimensions and formats. A good practice for site images is to make sure your images are sized correctly via the site settings and not the browsers rendering or user server.

Images consume bandwidth, so your site needs to be optimized in terms of content images to save bandwidth and improve site loading time to its best levels.

Images also are server requests made to your hosting server, so for images that are not needed to be cached, like social icons, payment providers icons, etc. you should use image sprites. That alone with boost your website loading time.

When it comes to learning about HTML and CSS to apply it to SEO, there are many online resources available. The best way to understand better how to reach your goals on SEO is to do most of the technical fixing your self. Sometimes, even when a team of developers next to you, they need to be taught how to do SEO technical fixings. You can help them as much as you like, or you can take the technical side of SEO and execute the task your self.

I prefer using Google Analytics, Search Console, and Google Dev Tools in Chrome daily. The reason is simple; it makes you productive and keeps you focused on the SEO tasks you need to focus first.

4. Keyword Research

For a successful SEO strategy, you must be able to determine if a particular keyword or term has enough relevance with your target audiences. An excellent first step is to search Google using the exact keyword that you want to rank for and see if the keyword appears on any relevant pages. Your choice of keywords to rank must be realistic, and in alinement with the possibilities, your site has to rank on the first page of Google for the keyword. Keyword research represents the core of a good organic traffic boosting strategy.

5. On-page SEO

The first step to getting the most out of your site is to make sure the pages of your site are optimized to deliver the content you want people to consume. You will do this by ensuring your site is optimized and load faster than other pages on the Internet. What we call on-page optimization, the act of making sure your site is ready to serve content as fast possible and as efficiently as possible. A successful SEO strategy relies on getting your site optimized as soon as you can. Otherwise, your site will not perform well on Google search.

6. A/B Testing

It would be best if you determined which content perform better than others, which page people like the most and which page is the most clicked for SEO purposes. A/B testing becomes interesting and useful. A/B testing is one of the best and quickest ways to get insights into what your site visitors are interested in and what your site is trying to reach. For SEO, A/B testing is a necessary and valuable tool to improve your search engine rankings and improve conversions for your business. Google, called Google Optimize, provides one of the best free tools for A/B testing.

7. Local SEO

The main goal of any SEO is to gain a high search engine ranking on Google. You must first understand what your client business is all about before you start any SEO campaign. If your client business sells directly to customers, you can smoothly perform SEO campaigns for that purpose, beginning with the local area or even the city of your client business.

For every business, a local SEO strategy is essential; you need to know your client target audience and what they want. You can start by adding your client’s business to Google My Busines, if not there yet. If your client’s business is register and active on GMB, then check where your client business portal on Google My Business needs to be optimized.

8. Mobile SEO

Mobile SEO is a technique that makes sure your website is mobile optimized for all devices on the Internet. It includes tablets, mobiles phones and laptops. Mobile SEO is crucial to get your business in front of potential customers on different browsers, which makes them more likely to convert.

Today around 91% of internet users use mobile devices to access the web. It gets based on data from Datareportal. With that amount of potential buyers using their mobile to browse the Internet, it is made clear why you need to optimize the websites for mobile.

9. Link Building

An SEO campaign should work on every aspect of the business, including the outreach strategy, and links to other websites, social media and email campaigns. Digital marketing experts say that link building and promoting your business will help to attract more customers and generate more sales.

That is clear, but the relevancy of those third party links can affect any website online presence and marketing activities. It is essential to check the existing website’s links to ensure they are relevant and useful for the website. Mastering this skill should happen ASAP.

10. Social Media Skills

You’ve probably noticed that in the past three years, my social media presence has gotten significantly more popular. But, to some degree, you’ve probably not considered the other vital elements of SEO strategy to make your company more effective online and to engage with your followers. Now is the time to share and increase your social media presence. Keep in mind that each social media channel you decide to work with, must be worked individually and with a sound strategy.

10 KPIs You Must Start Monitoring on Your Website?

If you have a small website or a big website, you probably don’t need to monitor everything on your website. However, regardless if you have thousands of visitors or a few, you want to get maximum visibility and conversion rate. Thus you must start monitoring these critical KPIs. When you are beginning on SEO, these KPIs becomes your daily check because it represents the mirror for effectiveness in landing the right visitors.

Top 10 KPIs You Need to Monitor on SEO

1. Organic traffic:

The most valuable source of leads, and for sure, the one that you want to maximize.

2. Loading Speed:

Your website should be very fast to load, and when optimizing the loading speed, consider both mobile and desktop users. One good strategy is to consider users with low internet speed bandwidth.

3. Keywords Ranked on Main Search Engines:

These keywords should be your essential keywords first, your money-making keywords. They are the source of sales from Google, Yahoo and Bing. Don’t forget Baidu and Yandex if you are doing global SEO.

4. Website Visibility on SERPs:

Search visibility should be the highest level of visibility. Make sure you have an excellent on-page optimization because search visibility tells you how often your ranked pages gets shown on search results.

5. Backlink Profile:

A backlink profile gives you access to many essential SEO signals, such as social sharing, backlinks from a specific website that can help or hurt your rankings. Avoid link manipulation and over linking. The internal linking of the website is also vital to a link profile.

6. Organic Traffic CTR:

A lot of SEOs are confused about how to measure organic traffic. I know I was. That is why I have decided to share a straightforward method with you to focus on when working on bringing organic traffic to a website. You must focus on conversions rather than traffic. Yes, traffic is significant, but your client won’t be happy if their traffic is not converting.

Here is where CTR takes an important role. CTR gives us the ratio of clicks based on the total visitors a page receives. In simpler terms: Good CTR = brings more traffic.

7. Bounce Rate:

In this section, we will go more in-depth on this topic. Bounce Rate gives us the per cent of visitors who click on your link and for how loan dwelled on your website for some time. It gives us an excellent indication of how good your content on-page is engaging people in the conversion path.

There are different opinions on what a reasonable bounce rate should be. Depending on your niche, that number should be below 50% always. This KPI is a per-page measure, so the percentage must be within 50% range or less. Not all pages will have that level of engagement, so keep an eye on the underperforming pages and work them to be on the 50%. Also, the other four significant things affect the bounce rate:

  1. Loading speed
  2. Content quality
  3. Website UX and UI
  4. Font contrast and font size

8. ROI

Like in any other business, you or your client want to invest money or time and receive return from it. You are aware of the importance of a ” good ROI” on your SEO. If you do not have any good RO I, then you will need to improve your business strategy and optimize your website accordingly.

9. Traffic Value on SEO:

Few are the SEO today caring too much about traffic value, but it is imortant. Here is why traffic value is an important KPI:

Depending on the organic traffic amount your site is receiving, you will get a value on money for that traffic. That value gives you four major KIPs:

  1. How much you have to pay to Google (example) to receive that same amount of traffic.
  2. How relevant is your traffic for the search engines to present your site as a search result.
  3. The importance of your ranked keyword to search engines
  4. How well prepared is your site for monitising with ads or banners.

10. Session Duration Average

The avergae session duration should be the highiest possible. Above 4 minnutes in imporant pages. Monitoring session duration is recommended to determine the quality of your website and improve the usability of your page. Avoid boring content and distracting features, since that can be detrimental to your website.

All these KPIs are good and important, but where can you see them all?

Go to Google Analytics, and check all the tools you have there for free. There are several tools you can check that are not mentione above, but you will discover them all, the more you wokr your SEO Skills.

What does it mean, backlinking?

Backlinking is a process of referring from one link to another link each link representing a web page.

The link can get added in different ways:

  • To a word, they customarily called, Anchor Text.
  • To an image
  • To a button
  • It can also be the naked link.

The possible applications for backlinking are a lot, but you need to know how to recognize them.

For the most part, the most common causes are:

  • To refer to a source of information used in your content.
  • To complement the content on any of your pages.
  • To mention a vital website.
  • To improve your site internal structure.

Furthermore, backlinking is also consider search engines as an indicator of website relevancy for a particular topic. Based on this, the more relevant to your content a backlink to your webpage is, the more signals it will give to the search engine to consider the better ranking position for your website.

It can also work backwards when a website not related to your niche and with a lousy reputation links to you, that can result in a penalty and negative influence.

There is also something called link manipulation. For this reason, Google runs an algorithm called “Penguin”. This Penguin algorithm, its task is to discover those websites manipulating their link profile to trick the search engine. Once a website gets caught doing that, it starts to lose its ranking positions and can even get de-indexed from Google Search Results Pages.

Top 5 First Steps to Gain Site Authority

On search engine results, your site authority plays a vital role because it helps Google determine whether your content is worth linking to for future organic search results.

The authority of a domain gets measured on a scale of 0 to 100, where 100 is the highest-ranking domain, 0 represent the lowest Domain Authority. Website age, popularity and size all affect your domain’s authority. Your domain authority and your SEO efforts go hand in hand with your content quality and page ranking.

A couple of points worth mentioning here:

  • Site Authority is a combination of “Link Equity” ( the relationship between your site and other sites pointing to your site ) and “Trust”.
  • Site authority is a metric not used (at least not publicly) by Google. Thus is a third party metric we, SEOs, use to monitor the websites relevancy on SERPs using the websites link profile and sharing activities.

Check the image below as how SEOsiren divided the KPIs to determine a site authority:

how domain authority works

Site authority can get easily quantified and measured but is essential nonetheless because it represents the perception of a website’s content, quality, and reliability, that all search engines ( Google, Yahoo and Bing ) believe the website holds. Because of this important, and considering you are starting on SEO. You can do these easy to follow guide to help your website gain more authority.

Step One: Develop a Social Media Outreach Strategy

There are plenty of tools and platforms out there that help you promote your business on social media platforms. You will find them fast, but some can be pricey.

Focus on generating a fair amount of “Social signals” and build a substantial social media presence. Social signals help your website gain authority based on how often links are sharing your content on Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Reddit etc. All of them together help your website gain more authority.

Step Two: Content Quality Must Cover a Search Intent:

Content should be relevant to the search for its subject matter. When writing and editing content, make sure you’re not missing the point of the query. The title is the primary way of getting information out to search engines that could be useful in the searches.

Keep an eye on the meta description of your content. It should be descriptive, but it also must provide information about the content of your page that can be of importance to the searcher.

Please take a look at your competitor; they usually are missing that point. You want to make sure you cover every topic possible with your content.

Step Three: Focus on Keywords you Can Rank Fast:

It is a common practice for SEOs to try to rank on keywords with a high volume of searches and low difficulty to rank. But that can be negative and hurt your overall SEO efforts. Focus on keywords that are 5-10 points below your site authority, which is where your site can own a keyword fast. And when mentioning quickly, it means in a few months, usually 3-6 months.

But don’t condemn your SEO strategy to keyword research, for search engines, notably Google, are getting away from keyword-based ranking. In the SEO of today, it is more about content relevancy and site authority in a topic.

Step Four: Loading Speed:

The ideal loading speed for any page of your website is around 1-2 seconds per page load. However, some websites may require an even faster loading time. Therefore, we need to be very careful about what pages are loading inside those 1-2 seconds. We already mentioned this above; therefore, here you have another reason to fix your site loading speed.

Step Five: Backlinks

A great site with no backlinks, represents a great site with no traffic, which mean it won’t make any profit, but is excellent right?

That is not what you need; you need a website that is great yes, but also that people feels compelled to share its content, to bookmark it, to use it as reference for their content, etc. Therefore, your website needs a great backlink profile, internally and externally. You will never know that your website is worth sharing if no one likes it.

Wrapping up this section:

Follow these five steps to rise your website authority, and you will see an increase in traffic, thus more ROI and leads.

How Do You Gain and Retain Clients?

Here are a few tips that I have learned while running my own small business :

  • Be yourself There is nothing wrong with being yourself and being open to the possibilities offered by this new industry. However, you will find that people will not take you seriously if you come off as arrogant or unprofessional.
  • Be transparent and honest This is a fact that has proven to be quite powerful in this industry. Don’t create false claims or use vague terms, or you will run into problems.
  • Focus on the solutions Do not focus on the issues. Your potential clients know they need help, that is why they need you.
  • Create monthly reports – This will keep your clients informed, and your work will have greater credibility.
  • Work under a methodology – Your clients are looking for answers to their questions, and you need to present your solutions in total order and logically.
  • Don’t overprice services – If you are getting good results with your services, you don’t need to raise your prices or offer too much either.
  • Don’t confuse your clients with too much statistics. – Numbers in statistics can be confusing for a client to understand, be direct with your presentations and never confuse your clients with numbers that they don’t need.
  • Respect SEO best practices. – In this industry, SEO is essential; however, you need to treat it with respect and never abuse it.

Top 10 Things to Avoid While Doing SEO

❌ Having the wrong expectation:

You cannot start doing SEO, thinking that all posts will rank the same or that you will rank on the first page the first month. Wrong expectations can ruin your SEO efforts. As a good marketeer, you need to work with the queries your website have the best chances to rank.

❌ Posting Content Not Related to Your Industry:

If you are in the SEO industry, your content should be inside that topic. When having a magazine, you need to use categories and segregate your content following each category.

❌ Using Keyword Stuffing:

Don’t go repeating keywords that make no sense with the text. Focus on creating great content, don mind too much on keywords. Because keywords are losing importance, what is getting more relevant position now is topic relevancy. Use semantically related keywords and synonymous.

❌ Targeting the Wrong Keywords:

Your website got to be competitive inside it reaches and authority. There are keywords or topics that you won’t be able to rank unless you build the authority first. It would be best if you focused initially on topics or keywords that will give you visibility on search results.

❌ Having Poor Optimised Title Tags:

Your meta tags are essential for search engines, not as much for ranking as for CTR. It would help if you had your pages title tags optimised and aligned with your content on that particular page.

❌ Using Not Original Content:

Your content hot to be original. You cant to other websites, copy a paragraph and paste it on your page. That is called plagiarism, and your website will lose credibility in search engines. Thus it wonk rank at all.

❌ Using Bad Internal Linking:

Your website should be a cluster of information internally linked to relevant pages. This gets called internal backlinking, as mentioned above, and it is critical to passing PageRank internally. But don’t spam if you want ever to reach advance SEO tactics.

❌ Ignoring the Use of AMP or Responsive Web Design:

Your website no only needs to be responsive; it should also have its AMP version ready. This will ensure your site will load faster on mobile devices, thus increasing the site visibility on SERPs.
